Instructions for visa processing

General
  • No Visa Fee is charged from Chinese Nationals for Tourist visa (other than Chinese Nationals are, however, required to pay visa fee)
  • Holders of Diplomatic and Official Passport of the People’s Republic of China do not require visa for visit and stay in Nepal for up to one month. Similarly, holders    of Diplomatic and Official passport of Mongolia do not require visa for visit and stay in Nepal for up to three months.
  • Passports are not accepted through parcel.
  • Individual applicant should apply in person at the Embassy in Beijing or at the consulates in Lhasa, Hong Kong, Guangzhou or Honorary Consulate in Shanghai or any diplomatic mission of Nepal abroad.
  • Chinese nationals are eligible to obtain on-arrival visa at authorized entry points including the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. This provision also applies to Mongolia and DPRK nationals.
  • Tourist visa for Nepal can also be applied through travel agencies authorized by the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) to operate overseas travel.
  • Passports should be valid for at least more than six months for processing of visa.
  • Please fill in the application form completely/correctly, don’t leave any column vacant (the provided data on the application will be verified by our staff).
  • Nationals of other countries visiting China (as visitors, tourists) are advised to apply for visa at the Embassy of Nepal in their country of residence or the Embassy of Nepal concurrently accredited to their country.

Tourist Visa

Required Documents:

  1. Duly filled in visa application form online.
  2. Copies of Passport and identity Card.
  3. One recent passport size photograph affixed to the form (size: 35*45 mm)
  4. Birth Certificate (for children under the age of 10 years)
  5. Provide real and valid round-trip air tickets and hotel orders.

Online application for tourist visa (Link: Online Services (immigration.gov.np))

Chinese nationals as well as nationals of other countries those who wish to visit Nepal may apply online in order to avoid long queues and unnecessary hassles at the entry points of Nepal. Kindly submit a complete Online Visa Application form to the Immigration Authority of Nepal in your first attempt! To do that, here are few things you need to prepare:

  1. Please keep your valid passport at hand.
  2. Ready a recent digital photograph (size: 1.5” x 1.5”) in your removable device to upload your photograph for the application.
  3. Gather beforehand: a) a detailed permanent residence address, and b) detailed address in Nepal.
  4. You need to provide telephone numbers—landline and mobile.
  5. You need to provide your email address too.
  6. The submitted application will remain in the system for 15 days. After 15 days, the application will be deleted automatically from the system.
  7. Once the application is successfully submitted, a receipt will be sent to your email immediately.
  8. Print the receipt and keep it with you as you need to produce it before the Immigration Authority.
  9. For your convenience, the deadline to contact the Immigration Authority will be mentioned in the receipt.
  10. The receipt also mentions about the documents you need to produce before the Immigration Authority.
  11. Please contact the Immigration Authority within 15 days after the submission of application.
  12. For example, if you submit your extension application today, and your visa is expiring the next day, on the third day if you visit the Department of Immigration, you will have to pay late fee of that day. In order to prevent this sort of hassle, please submit your extension application on time and get your visa renewed before crossing the expiry date.
  13. When you contact the Immigration Authority, please make sure you have the receipt and proper documents with you including the necessary fee.

Visa Fee

Tourist Visa Fee:

1. Chinese nationals are exempted from visa fee

2. For other nationals:

15-days multiple entry: RMB 225

30-days multiple entry: RMB 375

90-days multiple entry: RMB 950

3. Only RMB in cash will be accepted. Please bring the exact amount.

4. On-arrival applicants need to pay USD 30,  USD 50 and USD 125 for the period of 15, 30 and 90 days respectively.

Gratis Visa (Visa for Free)

  1. Gratis Visa is issued free of cost in case of following categories of Visa applicants:
  2.  Children below 10 years except US citizens
  3. Up to 30 days for SAARC Citizen (except Afghanistan) visiting Nepal for the first time in a given visa Year.  Afghan citizen are eligible for Gratis Visa on Arrival only upon the recommendation of Department of Immigration. If you are an Afghan citizen, you can request concerned institution inviting you to Nepal for necessary paperwork with Department of Immigration to get you Gratis Visa ‘On Arrival’.
  4. Non-Resident Nepalese (NRN) Card holder (issued by MoFA /Nepalese Diplomatic Missions abroad)
  5. Chinese Nationals

Diplomatic /Official Visa

For Diplomatic and Official passport holders from China, visa is not required for the period not exceeding one month each time. Similarly, for Diplomatic and Official passport holders from Russia, Thailand, Brazil and Mongolia, visas are not required for the period not exceeding three months each time. However, to get a diplomatic or official visa, copy of the invitation and letter from the Ministry concerned or Embassies are required.

Note: Chinese Passport for Public Affairs requires a visa, either at the Embassy/Consulate or on-arrival.

FAQ (VISA)

What are the requirements for obtaining a Tourist visa?

All applicants should fill out up a Visa application form, which can be downloaded from the Embassy’s website (click here to download). Applicants should include the original passport and its copy and one passport size recent photograph.

Can I apply visa online?

Yes. You can apply visa online in order to avoid unnecessary queues at the entry points of Nepal.  Please refer to online.nepalimmigration.gov.np. Once you submit your application you will receive a receipt in your email, which you can present to immigration officer at the entry points of Nepal, including Tribhuvan International Airport. Please note that your application will remain in the system for 15 days. After 15 days the application will be deleted automatically from the system.

Where do I apply to get my visa?

You can apply in person at the Embassy in Beijing, Consulates of Nepal in Lhasa, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, and Honorary Consulate of Nepal in Shanghai or apply through registered travel agencies by the CNTA.

I am In Mongolia. How can I get a visa?

Nationals of Mongolia can apply visit visa at the Honorary Consulate’s Office in Ulaanbaatar. They also can obtain visa on arrival at any entry points of Nepal.

How long does it take to obtain a visa from the Embassy?

The Embassy collects application forms in the morning from 10:00-12:00 hrs. and issues visas after 3 working days in the afternoon from 15:00-16:00hrs. For example, Visa applications made on Monday can be collected on Thursday afternoon.

How much do I need to pay for Nepal visa?

Chinese nationals are exempted from tourist visa fees. Likewise, children below 10 years and nationals of SAARC countries are also exempted from visa fees for the period of 30 days.

As a tourist, can I stay longer than 150 days continuously in two calendar years?

Yes. Visitors who have entered into Nepal towards the end of one calendar year may prolong his/her stay beyond 150 days by adding the maximum period of another 150 days allowable for the next calendar year. However, tourists who have left Nepal before the expiration of the visa issued to him/her for the current year shall not be allowed to use or carry forward the unused period of visa to another calendar year.

Can I work with a tourist visa?

No. A foreigner having a tourist visa shall not be allowed to work in Nepal, with or without receiving remuneration.

I am a Chinese national. Do I need to pay any fee for Tourist visa to Nepal?

No. Chinese Nationals are exempted from visa fee for Tourist visa. Except Chinese nationals the following applicants of other than Chinese are entitled to obtain a gratis visa from the Embassy:

  • Children under the age of 10 years.
  • A 30 day visa for the citizens of SAARC countries (such a visa is issued once in a calendar year).

Who are exempt from obtaining a visa to visit Nepal?

Diplomatic and Official passport holders of the People’s Republic of China, Russia, Thailand, Brazil and Mongolia and the UN Lassies Passer Holders do not need a visa to visit Nepal.

Can I obtain a visa on arrival in Nepal?

Yes. Except nationals of few countries all nationals are entitled to obtain visa on arrival.  However, a prior visa is always recommended to avoid any unforeseen last minute hassle.

Which countries are on the list whose nationals are not eligible to obtain a visa on arrival?

Nigeria, Somalia, Liberia, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Swaziland, Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan and all Travel Document holder applicants needs visa in advance. They are advised to apply for a visa at the Embassy prior to their visit to Nepal.

How long is an entry valid for?

A visa issued by the Embassy is valid for six months from the date of issue. The validity of a visa date is computed, however, from the date of arrival in Nepal.

Do I need come in person at the Embassy to submit my application in person?

Submission of the application in person is always a preferred option.

It is mandatory for the applicant from Nigeria, Somalia, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Swaziland, Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan and holders of Travel Documents to come in person to apply for a visa.

Can I get a transit visa for Nepal?

Yes. Transit passengers willing to spend overnight in Nepal on their way to any third country with confirmed air tickets, and passengers of aircraft that had to make an emergency landing in Nepal are eligible to obtain a transit visa.

Are there overland entry and exit points between Nepal and India and Nepal and China borders?
